A study published in the JNCI: Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that excessive sitting – more than eight hours a day – can lead to an increased risk of certain cancers – and to such an extent that it has prompted US experts to announce “sitting is the new smoking”.
With this in mind we have created a tiny Windows app called "StandUp" that reminds us to get up and stretch more regularly.
We all know we can be more productive if we take frequent short breaks to keep our bodies fresh and our minds alert. StandUp is a free Windows app that takes up minimal system resources and reminds users to stand up, walk a bit, or stretch at regular intervals.
The app is automatically set to remind you to stand up and move every 60 minutes, but you can choose any interval between 5 and 120 minutes.
StandUp Reminder is available for Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8 (Desktop mode only).

Once the app is installed, it sits in your system tray and watches the clock for you. Its default is set to one hour, at which time it pops up unobtrusively and reminds you to stand up.
Right-click the StandUp icon in the system tray to set your options or to turn the app off.
Download and install the StandUp app and get moving today!
